I just got back from Midwest Slope Challenge and had a great time. Two days we
didn't have much wind so I flew the Unicorn. I was using a 500 maH battery and
had a thermal bump at about 100 foot off the ground and put the Unicorn up to
speck high. Flew nearly an hour. What a plane. Works great.

I just wanted to say that you have put together a great kit for a great
plane.
As an engineer, I appreciate clean and simple design, and the Unicorn definitely
lives up to my expectations.
After trying electrics 10 years ago (Great Planes Electrostreak) and being
terribly disappointed, the Unicorn has opened my eyes to what’s possible with
some thoughtful design and testing. While the brute force performance doesn’t
compare to my Modeltech Magic Extra, I find the Unicorn more enjoyable to fly.
I’ve been able to take risks and fly the Unicorn on small fields that would have
left my hands shaking if I would have tried it with a traditional balsa/glow
fuel plane.
Also, the battery life with the stock setup is wonderful. At the small park
where I fly, I find that I am actually dizzy and ready for a break before the
battery has run out.
The only mistake I made during construction was to start cutting the servo
cutouts on the bottom of the wing. I was able to fix my mistake, but probably
added a little weight in patching it up.
I’m still enjoying the 48” span, but figure I’ll be tempted to cut it down
before too long.

Hello, I have one of your Unicorn wings and love it. Last night at the flying
field everyone wanted to know what it was when it really out performed a Zagi on
the same motor.

The maiden flight went quite well. Since this is my first wing, I did take a few
tries to get the timing of the launch toss perfected. Eventually I settled with
the "pizza toss" method and about 2/3 power. A small amount of trim was
initially required as the plane nosed up and wanted to turn left. Once trimmed
out though, the Unicorn tracked straight as an arrow. By far this wing is the
most stable straight line flyer of my small fleet (Slowstick, Dandy Sport, and
Switchback Sport/3D).
The biggest surprise was the superb speed retention and glide rate of the
Unicorn. I was simply amazed at its ability to glide forever with power off. A
local gasser that I share the field with joked that I could not land the thing
because it would not come down. He was somewhat correct though, as I managed to
horribly overshoot every landing. By the way, don't try to flare landings with
this plane, it just takes off again.
Aerobatics were quite nice also. Rolls were quite fast and very axial. It
actually rolls better than my Switchback Sport. Loops were quite large and very
smooth. Inverted flight was very stable but require about 1/5 forward stick to
keep level, not bad for a flat bottom wing.
…But my love of trying stupid things did allow my "bounce test" of the Unicorn.
I plowed it in from about 40' up, running about 60% throttle. The unicorn
survived another bounce test near dark as I attempted catching the wing.
Unfortunately the thing was still carrying way to much speed so I jumped out of
the way and it caught a wing tip and cartwheeled slightly. The humorous part was
that I had cut the throttle 2 soccer fields away and it was still screaming fast
when it reached me.
… All and all I am quite pleased with the Unicorn.

I'm very new to flying, and to flying wings. I couldn't be happier with my
Unicorn. This evening was breezy to say the least. I was flying with 2 other
buddies. They both had Zagi's... Even though this is my first wing. I could
clearly see that my Unicorn was flying much better and carved thru the wind a
lot easier than they were.
We set up a helium balloon, on a string. And tried to pop it with our wings. I
had another buddy filming the action, but he is still new to video cams. The
pass where I hit the balloon and popped it wasn't caught on film, but the pass
where I got caught up in the string was filmed. I crashed to the ground, but no
damage.

All I have to say is WOW - this wing is fantastic and FAST (compared to slow
stick). The first flight took a bit of trimming but I managed to get it high
enough to trim it and keep it airborne. After that, it was superb. My setup is
the propulsion kit from Mark, with HS-81 servos and a GWS receiver. The CG is
right on the 10" mark with the battery all the way to the front of the bay (I
needed no foam spacer). I installed the servos about 9" from the center cord to
have better control and less bend in the elevons.
It took a bit to get up to speed and altitude (100% throttle) but after that,
50% was good for normal flying. I even throttled to 0% and it proved to be a
good glider.
I love this wing. Like I said before, I have nothing (wing wise) to compare it
against. I just love the fact that there's no plastic canopy to break, the
receiver is held in the foam (not in front of a stampeding battery), the battery
is IN the plane and the motor is above the wing and has a good flow of air to
it.

I finally got to maiden my Unicorn this morning and I LIKE IT! It was a
beautiful clear morning with no wind at all. I gave it a toss and away she flew
without a click of trim needed. I saw no bad tendencies at all. Rolls are axial;
loops are true, slows down well, and is relatively quiet. The only problem I had
was bringing it down… it glides forever! After overshooting one pass I brought
it around again and it still landed 50 feet further out than I’d planned.
Mark, you’ve done a great job on this plane. I also appreciate the thorough
documentation.

I've spent the last 20 min just examining the kit. All I can say is WoW!
Everything is neatly packaged in sealed wrappers. The wing itself shows no signs
of wire burns or deformations & fits together perfectly.
… Flew 3 full flights today 13-16 min each. Wind at about 8 MPH & 66 Deg F.
(Yes!) I now know that it means when a wing motor "complains" (Makes a
funny noise while flying that sounds kinda like it's shredding paper) It means
the airflow to the prop is disturbed. In fact I can reproduce it just by putting
my hand behind the prop & blocking the airflow & listening.
What's this have to do with a review??? A lot, the Unicorn has a much improved
airflow to the prop making the whole plane fly & respond better.
I really enjoy the longer flights but what I enjoy most is the Unicorns love to
actually fly like a plane. (Hard to tip stall & loops straight & large like
there is no tomorrow)
My brother & dad never liked wings because our previous wings didn't like to fly
like a plane with a good clean constant climb out & just kinda soar. The wings I
had before liked mostly to fly at full speed just a few feet above the ground.
The Unicorn (48") does everything well (& way much quieter). Inverted is awesome
& inverted looping back the hard way is easy & requires no dive first. Rolls
also very smooth & predictable. Reminds me almost of my gas pattern ships that
were smooth as silk.
I really like the thought about chopping the wings for further adventures, but
even though I've flown R/C 30+ years, I like the 48" just as it is with the more
wing area compared to other wings.
